• TriviaIn his book “Keep Moving”, Dick Van Dyke mentioned during the “Toot Sweets” segment, at 40 years old, he never bothered to warm up before a dance number. During filming, he felt something pop in his leg. He thought he had merely pulled a muscle, but soon after he couldn’t walk without limping. He went to a doctor, who told him his whole body was full of arthritis, and within five years he wouldn’t be able to get around at all without a cane or a wheelchair. Van Dyke responded to this prognosis by jumping up and dancing, which astounded the doctor. Almost 50 years later, in his brief role as Mr. Dawes Jr. in Mary Poppins Returns (2018), 92-year-old Van Dyke danced without any assistance.

This children motion picture mingles musical numbers , flat jokes , noisy action , flying car pursuits , humor with tongue-in-cheek, rip roaring and lots of amusement . This is an entertaining film loosely based on book by Ian Fleming and well adapted by Roal Dahl , it packs fantasy , musical numbers which both pastiche and subvert adventure and speculative fiction of the period ̈Belle Epoque . The picture incorporates contemporary action film as well as much use of adventure to portray its fanciful elements , furthermore visual effects within the form of the older-style films they have largely superseded . Riveting for its casting , but overall , roller-coaster spectacle . Most of the charm and wit remains from original story in this particular version . It results to be an amusing of somewhat aloof , storytelling of children classic with a magnificent star cast at its best . Stimulating adventures of ours protagonists are complemented by a breathtaking final attraction in the castle scenes . The film is a Dick Van Dyke recital , he sings , dances, stooges, makes acrobatics, tongue twister and pulls faces and grimaces . It’s a farce with the master comic pretty amusing and with several choreography and musical numbers . Ideal main cast is completed by phenomenal secondary actors as Lionel Jeffries , James Robertson Justice , Benny Hill and Desmond Llewelin , among others. Atmospheric , lively score by Irwin Kostal , fitting splendidly to adventure and musical numbers , including the classic leitmotif . Colorful and glamorous cinematography by Christopher Challis in Super Panavision 7o with the fantastic château scenes filmed in Neuschwanstein Castle, Hohenschwangau, Schwangau, Bavaria, Germany . The picture is lavishly produced by Albert R Broccoli ,James Bond’s producer, and brilliantly directed by Ken Hughes . He’s a good writer, producer and director, who achieved big time when made ̈Cromwell ̈, ̈Trials of Oscar Wilde ̈ , ̈Casino Royale ̈ and of course with ̈Chitty , Chitty Bang Bang ̈.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a 1968 British musical adventure fantasy film directed by Ken Hughes and written by Roald Dahl and Hughes, loosely based on Ian Fleming’s 1964 novel Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car. The film stars Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes, Lionel Jeffries, James Robertson Justice, and Robert Helpmann as the main antagonist, the evil Childcatcher.The film was produced by Albert R. Broccoli (co-producer of the James Bond series of films, also based on Fleming’s novels). John Stears supervised the special effects. Irwin Kostal supervised and conducted the music, while the musical numbers, written by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman of Mary Poppins, were staged by Marc Breaux and Dee Dee Wood. The song “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” was nominated for an Academy Award.

The ruthless Baron Bomburst, the ruler of Vulgaria, will do whatever he can to get his hands on the magical car. • At a rural England garage, two children, Jeremy and Jermima Potts, find a car formerly used for racing in the European Grand Prix until it crashed in 1909. They beg their father, down-on-his-luck inventor Caractacus Potts, to get the car for them; he makes multiple unsuccessful attempts to sell his inventions in order to raise money to but it, until he earns tips from a song-and-dance act at a carnival. He purchases the car and gives it a new name, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” for the unusual noise of its engine. In the first trip of the car, Caractacus, the children, and a wealthy woman they’ve had unflattering encounters with before, Truly Scrumptious, picnic on the beach. Caractacus tells them a story about nasty Baron Bomburst, the tyrant of fictional Vulgaria, who wants to steal Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.The story begins with the quartet escaping Bomburst’s pirates. The Baron sends two spies to capture the car, but they capture Lord Scrumptious, and then Grandpa Potts by chance, mistaking each for the car’s inventor. Truly, and the children see their grandfather, Bungie Potts, being taken away on an airship, following it to Vulgaria, which involves the magic car sprouting wings and propellers to fly. Grandpa is taken to the castle, and is ordered by the Baron to make another floating car just for him. He bluffs his abilities to the Baron to avoid being executed. The Potts’ party is helped and hidden by the local Toymaker who now works for the Baron. Chitty is discovered and taken to the castle. While Caractacus and the Toymaker search for Grandpa, and Truly searches for food, the children are kidnapped by the Baroness’ Child Catcher, as children are forbidden in Vulgaria under Bomburst’s rule.The Toymaker takes Caractacus and Truly to a grotto beneath the castle where the townspeople have been hiding their children. They concoct a scheme to free the children and the village from the Baron. The Toymaker sneaks them into the castle disguised as life-size dolls for the Baron’s birthday. Caractacus snares the Baron, and the children swarm into the banquet hall, overcoming the palace guards and guests. In the ensuing chaos, the Baron, the Baroness, and the evil Child Catcher are captured. Chitty comes to their rescue and, at the same time, they are reunited with Grandpa. The Potts family and truly bid farewell to the Toymaker and the rest of the village, then fly back home to England.When Caractacus finishes the story, they leave the beach for home, stopping to drop off Truly at Scrumptious Manor, where Caractacus dismisses any possibility of them having a future together, with what she regards as inverted snobbery. The Potts family arrive back at the cottage where Lord Scrumptious surprises Caractacus with an offer to buy one of his inventions, the Toot Sweets, as a canine confection, renaming Woof Sweets. Realising that he will be rich, Caractacus rushes to tell Truly the news. They kiss, and Truly agrees to marry him. As they drive home, he acknowledges the importance of pragmatism as the car takes off into the air again, this time without wings.
