Hazari is a miser who values money the most and always had big dreams of getting his son married to a rich-man daughter; so that he can demand huge sums of money as dowry. His encounters lead him to meet up with wealthy Mr. Mehra; and he decides to masquerade as a wealthy industrialist to fool Mehra, luck favors him and he does succeed in his endeavor, and the engagement of Raja and Madhu is set. But Raja had many upping at the college with Madhu until she accuse him of sexually molesting her, an angry Raja carried off Madhu to make her realize what she had done to him and both end up falling in love and the engagement is celebrated with pomp and ceremony only to break off when Mehra exposes Hazari, publicly humiliates him and cancel the engagement. Hazari consults Pandit Ji (Rajesh Puri) to suggest a girl, who is an only child of a billionaire. Pandit Ji brings Girdhari Laal (Satyendra Kapoor) to meet Hazari as Gurdhari is looking for a groom for his daughter. But Girdhari refuses to establish relations with a junk vendor, who has a huge dowry list.Raja spends his father’s money lavishly and throws a birthday party costing Rs 20,000 in one night, which makes Hazari livid. Hazari sells Raja’s motorbike to pay for the party. Raja & Madhu study at the same college. Both engage in numerous pranks against each other, but the matter keeps escalating. Its starts with Madhu spraying Raja with mud from her car, when he was walking to college. The next day Raja pretends to be a blind student and earns Madhu’s sympathy by coming in the way of her car. Madhu takes Raja all the way to class, only to be humiliated as Raja makes fun of taking all sorts of liberties with her. Madhu then challenges Karate champion Shakti (Adi Irani) on behalf of Raja. Raja announces a wager that the winner of the fight will kiss Madhu, which she accepts. Raja wins the fight, but then refuses to kiss Madhu.Hazari’s encounters lead him to meet up with wealthy Mr. Durgesh Mehra (Saeed Jaffrey); Durgesh is a billionaire and has one daughter, exactly what Hazari is looking for. Hazari decides to masquerade as a wealthy industrialist to fool Mehra. Luck favors Hazari and he does succeed in his endeavor. Mehra sees Hazari praying for a daughter-in-law at a temple. He meets Hazari and says that he has a daughter. The fathers get Raja and Mehra’s daughter Madhu (Madhuri Dixit) to meet, but they cannot stand each other.The college goes for a camping trip to Ooty. Raja pranks Madhu by getting her to enter the men’s bathroom. Madhu pranks Raja by changing the room numbers such that Raja enters Madhu’s room. Madhu accuses Raja of sexually molesting her due to which Raja is expelled from college. An angry Raja carries off Madhu to an abandoned shed to make her realize what she had done to him and that sexual assault allegations should not be made in jest. Madhu understands the point and accepts her mistake in front of the college principal. Raja and Madhu end up falling in love. They return home and give their consent to their marriage to their respective parents. The engagement is celebrated with pomp and ceremony only to be called off when Mehra exposes Hazari (Turns out Girdhari is Mehra’s friend and reveals Hazari’s truth to him), publicly humiliates him by slapping him in front of everyone and cancels the engagement. Hazari vows revenge for this slap.But by now Madhu & Raja love each other deeply. Mehra has Raja arrested, but then Madhu gets herself arrested as well, to spend time with Raja in the same jail cell. Mehra tries force to get Raja beaten up but can’t keep them apart. Mehra plans to leave the country with Madhu, but Raja enters his house by stealth & marries Madhu in her room, while Mehra can just watch as he has been locked outside.Mehra refuses to forgive Madhu & Hazari refuses to accept her. Both are kicked out from their respective houses. Madhu & Raja start a new life in a location just out of town & build a home with their bare hands. Raja is a construction worker & has a serious accident & requires an operation costing Rs 1 Lakhs to save his life. Mehra is out of town. Hazari agrees to help but only on condition that Madhu will no longer meet Raja or be his wife.Mehra finds Madhu on the streets & Hazari insults Mehra by taunting him that a rich industrialist’s daughter is on the streets like a poor beggar. Meanwhile he tells Raja that Madhu has left him & went back to Mehra for a comfortable life. When Raja goes to meet Madhu, she remembers her promise & pretends not to love Raja.Hazari decides to marry off Raja again for a rich dowry & Madhu decides to leave the country upon learning that Raja is getting married again. Then Raja’s mother tells Raja of the game played by Hazari. Raja cuts all ties with his dad & rushes to airport to stop Madhu. But Raja is late & the flight takes off. At airport Raja finds that Hazari reached there on time & stopped Madhu from leaving. Raja & Madhu are united again.
