đŦ Reviews and feedback
Lights, camera, horror! If you’re contemplating delving into the spooky world of the 1920 movie, buckle up for a rollercoaster ride through eerie winds, big empty bungalows, and cracking mirrors. Picture this: a mix of love and lust entwined with possession and exorcism, all set in the chilling backdrop of 1920. It’s like The Exorcist decided to take a detour to Bollywood town! But is this horror flick worth your time? Let’s dissect this spine-chilling tale piece by piece.
Let’s address the elephant in the room first – the critics’ scathing reviews. Some claim it’s a pretentious scenic video shoot masquerading as a horror film. Ouch! And comparing it to The Exorcist is like pitting a kitten against a lion. However, don’t let these naysayers deter you just yet. Sometimes, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder…or in this case, the scream of the viewer!
Now, onto the good stuff – the storyline and dialogues. Imagine a haunted mansion housing secrets darker than its shadows. A young architect and his wife stepping into a realm where darkness thrives, seeking revenge and consuming all who dare to cross its path. Sounds intriguing, right? The first scene sets the tone with precision, leaving hardly any room for dull moments.
Despite its flaws and comparisons to iconic horror films like The Exorcist (which is no easy feat), ‘1920’ manages to carve its own niche in Bollywood’s horror genre. It weaves together elements of betrayal, revenge, love, and lust seamlessly against a backdrop that oozes eeriness from every frame.
The cinematography deserves special mention here. Picture-perfect shots capturing the essence of fear lurking around every corner add depth to an otherwise familiar storyline. The play of light and shadow enhances the ominous atmosphere, keeping you on edge throughout.
Acting-wise, while some performances may raise eyebrows or elicit unintentional chuckles due to over-the-top dramatics (a common trope in horror films), others manage to strike a chord with their portrayal of fear and vulnerability in face of supernatural forces.
As for pacing and editing, ‘1920’ maintains a steady rhythm that keeps you engaged without feeling rushed or dragged along at snail’s pace. Each scene unfolds organically, building suspense with finesse until it crescendos into heart-pounding moments that will have you peeking through your fingers.
Now for some insider knowledge – Binge-watching Tips: If you’re planning a movie marathon centered around spine-chilling tales like ‘1920’, dim the lights, grab your favorite snacks (to distract yourself during intense scenes), and maybe keep a blanket handy for those inevitable jump scares!
In conclusion…drumroll please…I’ll give ‘1920’ a solid 7/10 rating! Despite its imperfections and comparisons to cinematic giants like The Exorcist, it manages to deliver an entertaining dose of horror with just the right mix of suspense and drama.
So there you have it! Whether you’re in for supernatural shivers or just looking for an excuse to cling onto someone during scary scenes (we won’t judge!), ‘1920’ offers an intriguing glimpse into Bollywood’s take on classic horror tropes.
Remember folks: when darkness beckons and eerie winds whisper tales of revenge…grab your popcorn and press play on ‘1920’. Just be sure to leave one light on!

1920. A uncanny name for a horror film. But trust Vikram Bhatt to make a franchise even out of this one. The first instalment, starring Rajneesh Duggal and Adah Sharma, appeared the oft repeated ‘Exorcist’ remake until the climax. Rajneesh chanting the entire ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in possessed Adah’s ears evoked loud claps at the normally silent Cinemax Eternity multiplex, Thane where I saw the movie in its first weekend. The audience truly connected with the religious intervention showed in the end and 1920 turned out to be a surprise hit of 2008. Jai Hanuman!!

â ī¸ Explanation (Spoiler)
In the movie “1920,” we follow the story of a young architect named Arjun, played by Rajneesh Duggal, who moves with his wife Lisa, portrayed by Adah Sharma, to an old mansion to renovate it into a hotel. However, as they settle in, strange and supernatural events start occurring, leading to Lisa becoming possessed. The film delves into the conflict between Indian and Western religions, as well as British and Indian societies, set against the backdrop of 1920s India when British rule was waning.
The narrative explores the cultural significance surrounding the couple and the haunted house they inhabit. Arjun’s family disapproves of his marriage to Lisa due to their differing religious backgrounds – Hindu and Catholic, respectively. This conflict sets the stage for Arjun’s internal struggle between the two spiritual influences when he seeks a solution for his wife’s possession. The possession itself is revealed to be rooted in a historical betrayal of the Indian army to the British, paralleling a betrayal within marriage.
The film’s lead actors, initially relatively unknown, deliver standout performances, especially Adah Sharma as the innocent and possessed wife. The acting style, while slightly exaggerated as is typical in Bollywood, adds to the overall atmosphere of the movie and complements the storyline. Despite some familiar Western horror tropes and clichÊs, “1920” successfully blends these elements with its Bollywood essence, offering a unique viewing experience.
Director Vikram Bhatt skillfully incorporates Western influences into Indian cinema, creating a large-scale horror film with impressive cinematography, special effects, and a successful musical score that enhances the cultural ambiance. While some plot points may not seamlessly come together, the film’s overall production quality and ability to engage viewers make it an entertaining and thought-provoking watch.
Despite its length and occasional plot inconsistencies, “1920” stands out as a significant Bollywood horror film that showcases the industry’s capability to produce compelling genre movies. For viewers intrigued by horror offerings from India, “1920” presents a captivating blend of supernatural elements, cultural themes, and historical allegories that make it a worthwhile watch.
