I don’t know if I could conjure up a more horrible predicament for someone to find themselves in than the two protagonists of this story. Marcus Trenton (Martin McCann) and Vaughn Carter (Jack Lowden) rekindle their childhood association with a hunting trip in Scotland, and almost right out of the gate find themselves in an impossible situation. Setting his gun sight on a deer, the reluctant Vaughn hesitates somewhat and pulls the trigger of his rifle just as the animal moves to reveal a young boy directly in the line of fire. When the boy’s father comes upon the scene and reacts to the horror of his dead son, Marcus shoots him from a distance to protect his friend from being killed in retaliation. The cover up involves burying the bodies in the woods and attempting to appear normal upon heading back to the small village where they are staying.Under other circumstances, the killing of the young boy would have been considered a terrible accident, and the shooting of his father might be considered a self defense move, but there’s no way any part of this argument would fly in a close knit community down on it’s luck from lack of employment and general poverty. Additionally, Marcus doesn’t help his cause when he entertains a woman from the village with cocaine and sex, a volatile combination that would have been bad enough on its own if the horror in the forest hadn’t happened. The entire scenario creates an uncertain aspect for the viewer, because even when the men are discovered to have participated in the tragic hunting event, you don’t really know what to expect in the way of punishment by the villagers. Led by a rational thinking leader of the small circle of relatives and friends of the dead victims, a solution is reached that appeases his neighbors, and spells doom for one, if not both men. For that though, you’ll have to catch the movie, currently playing as a Netflix original as I write this. I thought it was a well written, nervy thriller that leaves one unsettled with it’s final resolution and uncomfortable closing scene.

⚠️ Explanation (Spoiler)

In the movie “Calibre” (2018), the story revolves around two friends, Marcus and Vaughn, who go on a hunting trip to the highlands of Scotland. Vaughn, who is about to become a father, is inexperienced in hunting. The trip is meant to be a bonding experience for the friends before Vaughn’s life changes with fatherhood.

The trip takes a dark turn when Vaughn accidentally shoots and kills a young boy while aiming at a deer. The boy’s father confronts Vaughn, leading to a violent altercation where Marcus ends up shooting and killing the boy’s father to protect Vaughn. Marcus decides to bury the bodies to avoid legal trouble, as Vaughn was using the gun illegally and Marcus had supplied it. The situation is complicated by their hangovers and drug use.

As the story unfolds, Marcus and Vaughn try to cover up the incident to evade suspicion. However, their attempts are thwarted when they are trapped in the town due to their car tires being slashed by an angry local, who happens to be the father of a girl Marcus had been involved with. Paranoia and tension escalate as the locals start to suspect foul play when a father and son from the village go missing.

The situation worsens when Marcus and Vaughn are asked to join the search party for the missing father and son. During the search in the forest, the bodies of the boy and his father are discovered, leading Marcus and Vaughn to realize they need to flee to avoid being caught. In a desperate attempt to escape, they shoot at their pursuers, inadvertently damaging their car’s fuel tank.

As they drive away, the fuel runs out, forcing them to abandon the car and flee into the woods. In a harrowing turn of events, Vaughn is attacked by a dog, prompting Marcus to defend him by killing the dog. However, Vaughn is injured and unable to continue, leaving Marcus with a difficult decision to make about their fate.

The ending of “Calibre” leaves viewers questioning the moral dilemmas faced by the characters, particularly Vaughn and Marcus, as they navigate a series of unfortunate events that test their friendship, ethics, and survival instincts in a gripping and intense thriller setting.
